Over the years, Mark served in several leadership roles, eventually becoming superintendent of Charlotte Valley Central School. He remained in that position for approximately eleven years and later helped support the transition of his successor.

Retirement did not end his work in education. He continued serving through temporary and post-retirement roles, including work with the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a year as an interim high school principal in another rural New York school district.

Across nearly four decades, Mark worked with teachers, counselors, civil servants, support staff, administrators, school board members, families, and students. Some became mentors. Others became lifelong friends. Each contributed to his understanding of leadership and the responsibility that comes with it.

Mark does not present himself as someone who always had the right answer. His writing is shaped by the lessons he learned, the mistakes he witnessed, the challenges he faced, and the belief that meaningful work often comes down to improving one small part of the world at a time.

In retirement, he returned to an interest in writing that had followed him quietly throughout his life. Through memoir, he now shares the experiences, people, humor, conflicts, and hard-earned wisdom gathered during a long career in rural public education.
